BIRMINGHAM—Governor Bob Riley wrapped up the first day of his statewide bus tour on Tuesday in Birmingham after visiting and greeting supporters in Wetumpka, Prattville, Clanton, the University of Montevallo, Centreville, Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Selma.
The governor spent the day focusing on his “Plan 2010” and discussing his vision for Alabama. A major theme the governor echoed throughout the day was his push to expand tax cuts for Alabama’s working-class families.
“We will continue to push to expand the tax cuts that I signed earlier this year,” Governor Riley said. “These tax cuts will bring relief to 90% of Alabama families who created the budget surplus we have today.”
Increasing funding for education and maintaining strong ethical standards in Montgomery were also common themes throughout the day.
“You have not heard one charge of corruption or unethical behavior coming out of the Governor’s office in the last four years,” Governor Riley said.
The governor also spent part of the day campaigning for Republican legislative candidates running for the House of Representatives and Senate. The governor in Prattville today encouraged supporters to get out and help elect Joan Reynolds to the state Senate. Reynolds is challenging Sen. Wendell Mitchell in Senate district 30.
At the University of Montevallo, Governor Riley encouraged onlookers to re-elect legislators who have always stood by the governor in Montgomery. He asked that voters return Sen. Hank Erwin to the state Senate, and Rep. Cam Ward and Rep. Mike Hill to the House of Representatives.
Before ending his day with a rally in Selma, the governor spent time with his grandchildren in Birmingham, who surprised him at Vulcan Park in their Wizard of Oz themed Halloween costumes.
On Wednesday, the governor will continue his bus tour through North Alabama by making stops in Cullman, Hartselle, Florence, Athens, Huntsville and Arab.
